Below are the main points and opinions of some members of the SHGQCA group brought up during our discussion.
Teaching about relgion is great! As long as you are teaching it "this religion teaches this: "instead of "this is how it is:"
Religion has too big of an influence in todays society considering not all citizens are of the same relgions.
We should not know the religion of our politicians because it should not be relavant.
Religion is being used as a tool of division instead of unity. A "us vs. them" mentality has been developed seperating people of different relgions in oder to strengthen their own egos.
An important question to ask ourselves is "Are people being helped or oppressed?"
Some relgions are secular, and some relgions are postivie things that do not promote an "us vs. them" mentality.
Religion is a part of culture
Secular individuals feel discriminated in the United States
In the US it is presupposed that you are catholic
Christian has become a synanym for a good person. When there are plenty of Christians that can not be considered good people, and plenty good people that are of other religions.
Catholics have accepted evolution, have officially said that evolution is real and God made us distinct from animals. (The members pointed out that "we are in fact animals", but it is a good stept that the catholic church has accpeted evolution since there is hard scientific fact proving it.)
"Buddhism is not a religion" (Buddhism can be considered a religion or a philosophy)
Satanists do not acknoledge a supernatural relm
"A Satanist is a science based, politically active athiest"
Satanists belive in magic
Wiccans acknoledge gods so it is a religion
"Abortion is 200x safer than pregnancy" (according to reuters.com it is only 14x safer)
"Religion is a manipulation tool."
